Choosing Batteries for Solar and Off-Grid Storage
Off-grid and solar storage batteries cycle daily. That is different from a UPS battery that mostly sits on float and discharges only during rare outages. Choose chemistry and capacity with cycling in mind.
What to clarify first
Daily energy use (watt-hours or kilowatt-hours) and days of autonomy you want.
Charge source: solar array size, generator backup, or grid-assisted hybrid.
Inverter/charger voltage and supported battery types.
Lead-acid options in storage roles
Deep-cycle flooded, AGM, and gel lead-acid batteries are all used in solar and off-grid systems. Flooded often needs watering and ventilation. Sealed VRLA types reduce watering but still need correct charge profiles and temperature awareness. Depth of discharge strongly affects cycle life — shallower cycling generally lasts longer.
Practical selection tips
Size for usable capacity after your planned depth of discharge, not just nameplate Ah.
Account for temperature: cold weather cuts available capacity; heat shortens life.
Use a charge controller or inverter/charger programmed for the battery type you install.
Plan cable sizing, fusing, and enclosure ventilation as carefully as the battery choice itself.
