Golf Cart Battery Care and Replacement Basics

2 min read

Golf carts and many mobility vehicles use deep-cycle lead-acid battery packs (often 6 V or 8 V batteries wired in series for a 36 V or 48 V system). Good care stretches pack life; poor charging habits shorten it quickly.

Daily and weekly habits

  • Recharge after use rather than leaving packs deeply discharged.

  • Use a charger matched to the pack voltage and battery type.

  • Keep terminals clean and cables secure.

  • For flooded batteries, check water levels on a regular schedule and top up with distilled water only after charging when the manufacturer recommends it.

When replacement is due

Signs of aging include shorter runtime, uneven voltages across batteries in the pack, and batteries that will not hold a charge. When replacing, replace the full set rather than mixing old and new batteries in the same series string — weaker batteries drag the pack down.

Replacement checklist

  • Confirm pack voltage and individual battery voltage/size before ordering.

  • Match capacity and type across the entire set.

  • Inspect cables, connectors, and the charger while the pack is out.

  • Dispose of old batteries through a proper recycling channel — lead-acid batteries are recyclable and should not go in household trash.

Series strings: 36 V and 48 V packs

In series, voltages add while capacity stays that of one battery. Common carts use six 6 V batteries for 36 V or eight 6 V batteries for 48 V. A 36 V pack has 18 cells; a 48 V pack has 24 cells - useful when converting per-cell charge voltages to pack voltages.

Replace with matched sets

The same current flows through every battery in a series string. The weakest unit empties first and is stressed hardest. Mixing old and new batteries, or different capacities, accelerates failure. Replace with matched sets.

AGM conversion notes

Converting from flooded to AGM can reduce watering and spill risk, but the charger must use an AGM profile. Flooded presets may overcharge AGM or apply equalization. Never water or open AGM/gel batteries. Upfront cost is typically higher.

Replacing a golf-cart battery pack?

Matched series strings and the right charge profile matter more than swapping one weak battery. Luxena can help Southeast USA customers plan pack replacements and AGM conversions carefully.
