When to Replace a UPS Battery
Updated: Oct 22
Every UPS battery wears out eventually. This guide covers the service life UPS makers publish, the warning signs they list, and how they say to confirm a battery is really due before you replace it.
How long UPS batteries last, according to the makers
Maker | What it publishes |
Schneider Electric (APC) | Most APC batteries should last three to five years (FA158934). For single-phase Smart-UPS units, Schneider gives a typical VRLA service life of 4–5 years (FAQ000242964). |
Eaton | VRLA batteries need replacement every three to five years on average (Eaton, UPS installation). For smaller UPSs, plan a replacement once the batteries are four years or older (Eaton, 6 tips). |
Vertiv | For its equipment's sealed lead-acid batteries, Vertiv lists a life expectancy of 5 or 10 years, with recommended replacement at 3–4 years or 6–8 years respectively. For lithium batteries it lists 10 years, with replacement at 8–9 years (Vertiv CS-00269). |
Xtreme Power Conversion | Lead-acid P91 and P80 manuals give a battery service life of 3 to 5 years at 25 °C ambient. Xtreme's lithium (LiFePO4) P91 Li, J90 and J60 flyers list up to 15 years of battery life. The J60 flyer says that figure applies to standby or float use, and that actual life varies with discharge frequency, depth of discharge and operating temperature. |
These are the makers' own figures under their stated conditions. Real life depends on how the battery is used, which is covered below.
What shortens battery life
Heat. Schneider says operating at higher temperatures significantly reduces battery lifespan. It notes that the battery inside a UPS always runs warmer than the room, and strongly recommends a location with good airflow, proper ventilation and adequate cooling (FA158934). Eaton says heat can significantly reduce battery service life (Eaton, 6 tips) and that a UPS should never be placed in direct sunlight (Eaton, UPS installation). For temperature limits, follow your UPS and battery maker's published guidance, such as the operating temperature in your UPS manual.
Discharges and power quality. Schneider names the frequency and depth of discharges, and input power quality, as factors that reduce typical service life (FAQ000242964).
Heavy loads. Schneider says frequent heavy loads and rapid discharges can significantly shorten battery life, and recommends staying at or below 80% of the UPS's rated capacity (FA158934).
Storage. Schneider says long storage without periodic recharging can reduce lifespan and lead to unpredictable performance (FA158934).
Signs a UPS battery may need replacing
A replace-battery light or alarm. Schneider says a Smart-UPS Replace Battery LED is designed to light when the battery needs replacing (FA156584). On an Xtreme P91, the manual says the battery-replacement icons flash and the alarm sounds every 2 seconds.
A failed self-test. Schneider calls the self-test an accurate way to check battery health. If the Smart-UPS self-test fails, the batteries must be replaced (FAQ000242964).
Shorter runtime. Schneider lists shorter runtimes and longer charging times among the effects of an aging, sulfated VRLA battery, along with excess heat (FA158934). Xtreme's P91 manual lists a defective battery as one cause of shorter backup time.
Swelling or damage. Eaton suggests checking smaller UPSs for battery swelling or damage (Eaton, 6 tips).
Age. Schneider recommends replacing batteries that have reached the end of their service life even if the UPS passes its self-test (FAQ000242964). It also recommends replacing a UPS battery before it reaches about five years old, to avoid performance loss and reduce the risk of hydrogen sulfide gas emission from failing batteries (FA158934).
Low battery voltage found at a maintenance visit. Vertiv says preventive maintenance visits can find battery jars with low voltage, which puts the whole string at risk (Vertiv).
Confirm before you replace
Charge, then retest (Smart-UPS). With the normal load connected, Schneider says to charge the battery to 100% (at least 8 hours for a standard UPS, or 24 hours with external batteries), then run a self-test. If the Replace Battery LED stays on, replace the battery (FA156584). Steps for APC units: How to Run an APC UPS Self-Test.
Charge, then check runtime (Xtreme P91). If backup time is short, the P91 manual says to charge the batteries for at least 5 hours, then check capacity, and to consult your dealer if the problem continues.
Check the install date. Schneider notes that an incorrect "Battery Install Date" or "Last Battery Replacement Date" in its monitoring tools can trigger a replacement recommendation, and explains how to correct the date through the Network Management Card (FAQ000242964).
Replacing the battery safely
Follow your UPS manual. As an example, Xtreme's P91 manual says:
Only service personnel can replace the internal batteries.
Don't disconnect the battery connectors under load, and never while the UPS is in battery mode.
A small amount of arcing can occur when you connect the internal batteries. Connect the cables quickly and firmly.
The connected equipment isn't protected from outages while the batteries are disconnected.
Take the spent battery to a recycling facility, or ship it to your dealer in the replacement battery's packing material.
