Battery News Roundup: Week of October 6, 2026

6 min read

Battery News is Battery Info Hub's weekly digest of what's changing in batteries and backup power: recalls and safety notices, new standards, UPS and data-center developments, solar and storage trends, and the prices that affect what you pay. Each item is summarized in plain language from a primary or reputable source, with a link to the original and a short note on why it matters for homes and businesses that rely on batteries and UPS systems.

This launch edition gathers eight stories published between August 10 and October 5, 2026. Future roundups will cover the previous week.

Recalls & safety

Amazon-Sold NEWDERY Power Banks Recalled After Fire Reports

CPSC has announced a recall of roughly 21,380 NEWDERY power banks, model ZHX-PB22, which were sold on Amazon between October 2023 and November 2024 for $27 to $50. The lithium-ion battery inside can explode or catch fire. NEWDERY has nine reports of units exploding or igniting, including one fire that caused $2 million in property damage and one burn injury. Owners should stop using the black power bank with yellow cables right away and contact NEWDERY for a refund. CPSC warns not to put recalled lithium-ion batteries in the trash, curbside recycling or store drop-off bins; call your local household hazardous waste center first.

Why it matters: A small lithium pack can cause a big fire. Check the model number on any cheap power bank you use for phones, tablets or travel, and send recalled units to proper disposal rather than the trash.

Goal Zero YETI 3000X Power Stations Need a Fire-Risk Firmware Fix

About 46,200 Goal Zero YETI 3000X portable power stations are under recall because a circuit board can overheat and create fire and burn hazards. The roughly 92-pound units sit on a wheeled cart with yellow handles and sold for about $3,000 at REI and online retailers, including Costco.com and Goalzero.com, from May 2020 through August 2025. Goal Zero has four reports of units catching fire, overheating or smoking, with no injuries. The remedy is a free firmware update installed through the Goal Zero app, or with help from the company. CPSC says to stop using the unit until that update is in place.

Why it matters: Lots of people keep big portable power stations for hurricane-season backup. If yours is a YETI 3000X, update it before you need it in an outage.

UPS & data-center power

Samsung SDI Shows a Fire-Tested Lithium UPS and Its First Cylindrical LFP Cell

At Data Centre World Asia 2026 in Singapore, Samsung SDI showed battery products aimed at AI data centers. The centerpiece was a lithium-ion UPS solution that the company says recently became the first in the world to meet every requirement of UL Solutions' indoor Large Scale Fire Test, which checks for explosion risk and fire spreading between batteries. The booth also included cylindrical cells for battery backup units, among them a high-power 21700 nickel-based cell with a bottom vent. Samsung SDI also unveiled its first cylindrical lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, saying its own cell structure boosts output, capacity and safety.

Why it matters: Large-scale fire testing is quickly becoming the safety bar for indoor lithium UPS batteries. If you're thinking about moving a UPS from VRLA to lithium, ask for the system's fire-test results.

APC Smart-UPS Now Takes VRLA or Lithium in the Same Unit

Schneider Electric has launched a new generation of APC Smart-UPS that can run on either valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) or lithium-ion batteries. The company says it is also designed to accept future battery chemistries, so owners can change battery types without replacing the whole UPS. The first models are the SRTD On-Line series at 2.2 kVA and 3 kVA, aimed at servers and network gear. Orders opened in North America on September 1, 2026. Schneider says the line delivers up to three times the base runtime of earlier models, supports up to 10 external battery packs, and calls a dead battery the leading cause of UPS failure.

Why it matters: Small offices could start with lower-cost VRLA and switch to lithium later in the same chassis. Either way, routine battery checks are still what keeps a UPS from failing.

VRLA & lithium

C&D Technologies Shows New Pure-Lead AGM and Gel Telecom Batteries in Atlanta

C&D Technologies said it would introduce its Broadband MAX line of pure-lead AGM and gel VRLA batteries at SCTE TechExpo26, held September 29 to October 1 in Atlanta. The company says the series is designed to last longer in outside-plant telecom and broadband sites, so batteries need replacing less often. C&D also previewed TEL-HT MAX, a new member of its high-temperature TEL-HT family, which it says can cut total cost of ownership by up to 20%. It did not publish the baseline behind that figure. The booth also featured existing models, including Pure Lead Max batteries pitched as a single replacement over a 15-year UPS life.

Why it matters: VRLA is still the workhorse for UPS and telecom backup. Longer-life pure-lead designs could mean fewer replacements, but ask how life claims were tested, especially for hot outdoor cabinets in the Southeast.

Solar & storage

U.S. Battery Storage Sets a Q2 Energy Record as Systems Run Longer

The U.S. installed 5.4 GW and a record 18.9 GWh of battery storage in Q2 2026, according to the latest U.S. Energy Storage Monitor from ACP and Wood Mackenzie. Energy capacity rose 17% from a year earlier while power capacity fell 7%, because the average system now runs about 3.5 hours, up from 2.8. Homes added 676 MW, the fourth-biggest quarter on record. Nearly half of new residential solar systems (46%) now include a battery. Even so, the report expects home storage to shrink 4% in 2026, citing the loss of tax credits, before growing about 9% a year from 2027 to 2031.

Why it matters: More homes are pairing solar with batteries even as incentives fade, so choosing the right chemistry and sizing matters more for getting your money's worth.

Standards & regulation

CPSC Sets October Hearing on Proposed E-Bike Lithium Battery Safety Rule

CPSC will hold a virtual public hearing on October 21, 2026, on its proposed mandatory safety standard for lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility products. The proposal was first published on June 24, 2026, and targets hazards such as thermal runaway, which can lead to fires, explosions, toxic gas and burns. It would require these battery electrical systems to meet existing voluntary standards, with some changes. Anyone who wants to present must register and send written remarks by 5 p.m. ET on October 15. Commissioners voted 3-0 to publish the hearing notice.

Why it matters: Federal rules for consumer lithium batteries are getting stricter. While that rule is pending, buy certified packs and chargers, and don't charge e-bikes unattended near exits.

Supply & pricing

Lithium Prices Fell About 20% in Q3 After a Sharp September Selloff

Benchmark's quarterly review shows battery-grade lithium carbonate in China (ex-works) fell 20.8% during Q3 2026, ending at RMB127,750 per tonne (about US$19,025). Lithium hydroxide fell 19.2% and Australian spodumene feedstock fell 23.5%. An August rally, driven partly by supply problems at a Chinese mine, was erased in September. The biggest one-day drop came on September 16, after a third-party data firm sharply raised its estimate of lithium inventories, a change it later said was mostly about method. Benchmark also points to China pausing approvals for new energy-storage and EV cell capacity.

Why it matters: Cheaper lithium can eventually show up as lower prices for LFP storage and UPS batteries, but the swings are big, so get a firm quote before you lock in a large purchase.
